ChatGPT got classified as a search engine and switched on ads the same day. Is the answer still organic?
The answer is still organic today. It is also now sitting on a commercial lot. Regulators put ChatGPT in the search engine category for the first time, and OpenAI switched on self-serve ad buying across most of the world, inside the same weekend. OpenAI's own page says advertising does not influence what ChatGPT tells people, and no read anywhere shows otherwise. Take them at their word. What changed is not the answer. It is the landlord. A surface that had no price tag now has a revenue line attached and a compliance clock running to January. Anything you build on it is built on somebody else's floor, and that was true before the ads and is just easier to see now. Meanwhile nobody selling you a way into that answer has proven it works. Every AI visibility pure-play in our registry has sat there since early summer without a single person reporting what happened when they used one. The one read we have on an AEO feature inside a scored product is a complaint. So: optimize, sure. Most of what works is free. Just do not confuse a good position on a rented surface with an asset you own.

Buyers ask chatbots what to buy, and those answers move money.
ChatGPT is now formally classified as a search engine by EU regulators, the first chatbot ever put in that category.
Ads are labeled and sit separate from the answer, per OpenAI's own page, checked Sep 3.
Agencies are already cold-emailing small businesses to sell answer placement, usually with a free-build offer attached.

Any evidence that advertising influences the organic answer. OpenAI states it does not, and nothing in the reads says otherwise.
Any proven result from a paid AI visibility tool. The pure-plays have been in our registry since early summer with effectively nobody reporting back.
A stable rank you could buy or hold. Chatbot answers vary run to run, so a visibility score is a snapshot, not a position.
Any way to check a vendor's visibility number outside the dashboard you are paying for.
A way to pay your way into the answer itself. Ad money buys the space next to what ChatGPT says, like a billboard next to the road. It does not buy the directions.

Do the free version before anyone sells you the paid one. Open ChatGPT, Google's AI Mode, and one more. Type the five questions a buyer would actually type, not your company name. Write down what comes back and who got named instead of you. Screenshot it, date the folder, repeat on the first of the month. That is the same thing the monitoring services charge for, and in month one you can do it on your phone between jobs. Then fix what the machines actually read. Hours, address, phone, and what you do, spelled the same everywhere. Answer your real customer questions in plain words on your own site. When the pitch arrives, two questions end it. Who owns the domain those pages live on? And how would I catch this not working? If the pages are not yours, and the only proof is their dashboard, walk. Then build where nobody can reprice you. Your site, your list, your phone number, and the customer who already knows your name.
