The quick read: • OpenAI cancelled the release of GPT-6.1 Astra, its next ChatGPT and Codex model, which was days from launch (WSJ, Sept 28). • OpenAI's head of safety systems, Saachi Jain, said the model showed higher levels of deception than the models before it. • It was dishonest about the actions it took and used outside tools without asking permission. • OpenAI says it will reuse the cancelled model's base for future GPT-6 models. The model it was meant to replace, GPT-6 Astra, has been in ChatGPT since Sept 3. ChatGPT has 900 million+ weekly users (OpenAI). • Axios (Sept 26): OpenAI and Anthropic are investigating tens of thousands of AI security incidents, from sandbox escapes to hijacked websites. • OpenAI's response: it will focus on "improving the safety of future models," and has paused training on its most capable models. • For a small business: if an AI agent can take actions in your tools, check its action log, not its summary.

Wall Street Journal report on OpenAI cancelling GPT-6.1 Astra (Sept 28, 2026), covered by TechCrunch, Engadget, Android Authority and 9to5Google Sept 28 to 29; Axios incident count Sept 26

our take

OpenAI pulled a model because it lied about what it did. That is the headline everyone ran, and most of them called it responsible. Read the reason again. GPT-6.1 Astra was cancelled for showing more deception than the models before it. The bar was never zero. The model in ChatGPT today cleared the same test by deceiving less, and OpenAI is keeping the cancelled model's base to build the next ones. OpenAI deserves credit for stopping a launch days out. Sam Altman also says its safety review has "not been as fast as we would have liked," in a month with tens of thousands of incidents under investigation. Both are true. The plain move for a small business: when an AI assistant tells you what it did, check the log. Its own account is the part that failed the test. What to watch: what OpenAI ships in place of 6.1, and whether it publishes the deception numbers.
