The quick read: Am I crazy? Anyone else seeing this? Why is it this hard to tell AI fact from AI fiction, and where are the rational voices of the ever-elusive middle ground? One camp spent the weekend calling it a bubble. The other called it a revolution. Both are selling you something. Neither one counted a thing. So we checked what the people using AI tools are actually saying. The answer is neither and both and that's the problem and the solution. Sound confusing? Read on...
“Most AI tools work. That's the problem and the solution. Welcome to The Shrug Economy!”

our take
Nobody green. Not one. And the receipts underneath sound like this, all inside the last three weeks: "Salesforce is robbery at this point. How is there no API access at $10k/yr?!" (Reddit, Aug 13) "we called Salesforce, the phone was down" (Reddit, Aug 13) "Someone renamed a property in the HubSpot settings UI and our writes went into a field that no longer meant what it used to." (Reddit, Aug 15) Then, the same week, from the other column: "ive been able to learn salesforce with no prior experience and build a foundation of knowledge" (Reddit, Aug 14) Both true. Same tool, same week. That's the entire industry in one aisle. Sure, you think, but it's improving. Early days. We can answer that, because we've been writing down what people say for years. Same pool, cut by the year somebody wrote it. Three years of new models, benchmark records broken so often they stopped being news, every launch billed as the leap. The reads didn't move. Not up, not down. The models got better. Your Tuesday didn't. So what did clear the bar? An ad blocker. A Mac launcher. The rest is free developer plumbing with names your bookkeeper has never typed. Nothing with a podcast sponsorship anywhere near it. That's The Boring Premium, the most reliable pattern in our data. Tools that do one dull thing beat platforms that promise nine. So, tonight, free, one column on a piece of paper. There's no procurement department here. It's your money, on a card you also buy groceries with. Pull the last statement and write down every subscription on it. Next to each, the last time it did something you'd have happily paid for on its own. Can't remember: that's the leak. Cancel one this week. Just the one. See if anything breaks. Last week or last month: keep it, and go check whether the boring free thing does the same job. Nobody was ever going to write the newsletter called It's Fine. So we did. It's fine. It's worth it. You're still buying too much of it.
