WORKS FOR

Writing a controversial history textbook for a campaign to get it adopted by high schools, Creating and editing traditional documents where the content's ownership and politics are separate from the tool

KEY INSIGHT

It's a powerful, industry-standard suite, but its complexity can be frustrating for users who just need to write.

DOESN'T WORK FOR

Writing papers for grad school (drives users mad), Replacing WordPerfect for dedicated users who mastered its specific features like mail merge

For the makers of traditional software like word processors, all writing was the user's own - if someone used Microsoft Word to write a controversial history textbook and campaigned to get it adopted by high schools, the political quagmire was nothing to do with Microsoft.

Non technical users who had mastered mail merge in WordPerfect would rather beat you up and leave you in the gutter for dead rather than look at Word.

Hacker News • HackerNews • Use case: Attempted replacement for WordPerfect among dedicated users.

Not everyone wants or needs all of whiz bang features of Obsidian or Notion or Microsoft Word.

Hacker News • HackerNews • Use case: Implied as a complex word processor, contrasted with simpler writing-focused tools.

Calling iA Writer a competitor of Word like calling Hank’s Special Brew he makes in his garage a competitor of Heineken.

Hacker News • HackerNews • Use case: Implied as the bloated, mainstream word processing standard
