The quick read: • On Monday, Oct 26, 2026, Microsoft opened a Voluntary Exit Offer to about 60,000 employees, roughly 27% of its approximately 223,000 staff (Fortune). Microsoft confirmed the figure to TechCrunch. • Eligible: employees at vice president level and below on select teams in the U.S., U.K., Canada and India. Bloomberg reports Xbox, Windows, Copilot and Finance are participating. Some data center, sales and marketing staff are excluded (TechCrunch). • Terms: pay based on tenure, similar to standard severance. In the U.S., at least eight weeks of pay plus continued vesting, healthcare and career services (Fortune). Those who accept leave at the end of the year (Business Insider via Axios). • Chief People Officer Amy Coleman wrote that the offer gives employees "who may be considering a future outside the company a new choice." • Context: Microsoft reported $41 billion in capital spending for the quarter ending in June as it builds AI data centers (Fortune). It cut about 4,800 jobs in July (Fox Business) and more than 15,000 in 2025. • Microsoft has not said AI caused the offer. Reports tie it to cost pressure from AI infrastructure spending.

who’s making the noise

Microsoft memo by Chief People Officer Amy Coleman, published Mon Oct 26, 2026. Reported by Fortune, TechCrunch, Fox Business, Axios Seattle and Bloomberg.

our take

Read the memo and the word that matters is voluntary. Read the spending and the word that matters is data centers. Be fair to Microsoft. Nobody is being fired by this offer, the package follows standard severance, and a buyout is a gentler tool than the layoffs it ran in July. Some people will take the money gladly. But look at who is left out. Some data center staff are not eligible. The people are optional, the buildings are not. A company that spent $41 billion in a single quarter on capital is asking more than a quarter of its workforce whether they would like to leave. For a small business, Microsoft is not a stock story, it is your email, your Windows machines, maybe your Copilot seats. The teams named in this offer build and support those products. Ask your account rep who covers you next year, and keep your own notes on how your setup works. What to watch: how many accept by December, Microsoft's earnings on Wednesday, and whether a voluntary offer turns into a mandatory one.
