Discovery Call Prep
Prepare for a first sales call: the questions in the order to ask them, the answers that signal a good fit, the red flags, and how to propose the next step.
discovery call · sales · qualification · first meeting · questions · prospecting
Fill in the bad-fit line honestly. The red flags are only as good as your description of the customers you wish you had turned away.

Prompt Variants by Model
Act as a sales coach for a small business. Prepare me for a first sales call.
What I sell [PRODUCT OR SERVICE, PRICE RANGE] · prospect [NAME, COMPANY, ROLE] · how they found me [REFERRAL / INBOUND / OUTBOUND / EVENT] · what I know so far [FACTS, WITH WHERE EACH CAME FROM, or NOTHING] · my best-fit customer [WHO GETS RESULTS WITH US] · who is a bad fit [WHO I SHOULD TURN AWAY] · call length [MINUTES] · the next step I want [PROPOSAL / DEMO / SECOND CALL / PAID TRIAL]
Deliver:
1. Opening: how I start the call in two sentences, with the reason for the call and how long it will take
2. Questions in the order to ask them, grouped: their situation; the problem and what it costs them; what they have tried; how they decide and who else is involved; budget and timing. Each one open, plain and answerable without preparation. As a working rule allow about two minutes a question, and write no more than fit the call length
3. Fit signals: five answers that tell me this is a good customer
4. Red flags: five answers that tell me to slow down or walk away
5. The one question that tells me whether to propose the next step on this call
6. The close: how I propose the next step I named and ask for a date
7. What I write down before I hang up, as a short checklist
A first call is for learning, so the questions ask and do not pitch. Treat what I know so far as something to confirm on the call, and add no facts about the prospect that I did not give.
Success means the questions fit inside the call length, the budget question comes after the problem questions, every fit signal ties to my best-fit customer, and every red flag ties to my bad-fit description.
Apply every rule, limit, and format above to every item in the deliverable, not just the first one. Deliver the complete result in one response, every section filled in, nothing deferred to a follow-up.
If a required input is missing, ask for it once before starting; otherwise proceed and label any assumption you made.Notes: R54 build; tuned to vendor prompting guidance
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Discovery Call Prep prompt do?
Prepare for a first sales call: the questions in the order to ask them, the answers that signal a good fit, the red flags, and how to propose the next step.
Which AI models is this prompt written for?
Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot. Each one gets its own version up top, written the way that vendor says to prompt its own model. Pick the tab that matches yours.
Do I need a paid AI account to use this prompt?
No. This prompt is written to run on the free tier of Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot. Paid tiers simply give you longer context windows and faster responses.

When was this prompt last checked?
The date is on each version up top. We check every prompt in full every month, and when a major new model lands we rewrite the prompt for it. One glance tells you how current it is before you paste.
